The children of David and Agnes Bremner, whom we met in the previous chapter, were remarkably versatile, energetic, interesting—and tall. The photograph above has been dated July 1885 and, given the mourning dress, would seem likely to have been taken at their father’s funeral. Jane is seated with a stick, and had only a couple of months to live. It seems clear that the home at number 10 St James Terrace must have been broken up immediately and father’s business sold or closed down.
