Jane was two years younger, and—as we’ve already heard—died of tuberculosis tragically early a couple of months after her father at the age of only 23. She was regarded with great fondness in the family. A sewing table of hers with her initials on a brass plate on top was made for her by her brother Donald and is still owned by Ian, and a dress of hers in deep cerise is now with the Glasgow museum.
The curator, Rebecca Quinton, was able to date it from the size of the bustle to 1882–1883, when she would have been 20 or 21.
